Church Of Misery - Houses Of The Unholy (2009)

Alrighty, so I've had a taste for stoner/doom these past couple of months. I'm not real sure about how I came across this band, so far this album is pretty dope. The vocalist Yoshiaki Negishi was the past vocalist for Coffins (another great doom band), and his vocals are superior to what I've heard from most bands who try to recreate the 70s doom mantra. And although I wouldn't necessarily call this Black Sabbath worship, it definitely has some Sabbath undertones to it. Personally, I like the Sludgy riffage, the groovy melody, the heavy bass licks, and just the whole psychedelic effect of the music's ambience in general. The songs are dedications to some of the sickest known serial killers in history; Albert Fish, Richard Trenton Chase and Richard Speck to name a few. This album pretty much blew me away. I cannot do it's description full justice by trying to explain it to you (as it's hard to describe such the wonderful experience that it gives) so what the hell is there to say? You need to experience this album for yourself, then maybe you'll be more likely to understand exactly what I mean.

Boris - Amplifier Worship (1998)

Oh holy shit did I just add a Boris album?! It seems I did, do I get a hipster point?

This album is so special that on the 2003 southern lord re release, inside the spine of the album was a motherfucking gummy worm....... that's trve for you.

This is essentially a drone album for those who are looking to seek knowledge in the genre and in my opinion one of the albums (though you could argue that feedbacker is a better drone album) that tops the genre along with Sunn's Black One and Earth's Hex.

Combining elements of Boris's Drone at heart attitude and including a mixture of the Southern Esq sludge we have come to expect, Boris are one of those few bands that no matter what style they choose to play they have the uncanny ability of managing to still sound like Boris.

Bringing what is generally expected from a drone album; it's heavy, bass is a significant instrument throughout , it's repetitive yet at the same time it's not what you expect from this genre, vocals play a more significant role, the drum beat is much more recognisable and not a consistent beat and guitar riffs have more variation. As the aptly named first track states this album is 'Huge'.

The thing with this album is if you don't like it doesn't necessarily mean you'll dislike Boris, so check it out.

On a side note, I wonder if anyone has eaten the gummy worm?

Flower Travellin' Band - Anywhere (1970)

Genre - Hard Rock
Ratings - 82/100
Reviews - Its not an original album. Its a collection of some great covers done by the band before they actually came out with original stuffs. Believe me, its a great album. Very innovative covers and nice improvisations. And for Sabbath lovers, there is the cover of their epic self titled song. It has been done amazingly, the vocalist sounds better than Ozzy. But my favourite from the album is Louisiana Blues. Its a cover of Muddy Waters who is a blues singer. The original song is just 2.53 in legth but they have made this into an epic 14 minutes long track. The soloing in particular is beyond description perhaps one of the best heard in classic rock, yes its comparable to memorable ones like "Sultans of Swing" or "Freebird". Great album again that showed the hint of greatnss that manifested itself entirely in SATORI.

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori (1972)

Genre - Psychedelic Rock/ Hard Rock/ Traditional Doom
Ratings - 100/100 (one of few albums, that I rate so high)
Review - Flower Travellin' Band - Well the name would remind you of some emo alternative rock band.Well they aren't. This is the best thing Japan ever did to mankind, let alone music. Yes i know Japanese are a technoe giant but wth this pisses over anything they have done. There are so many awesome bands in Japan, but a band as old as this and still kicking some major ass is really mind blowing.
Well how do they sound? There is a huge Sabbath worship on the album but mind you its not a bad thing. They prefer to add their own innovations and improvisations, while still manage to create a great heavy/doom riffs just like sabbath. Add to that elements of Psychedelic rock also. Nasal vocals do magic for heavy/doom and Kyoko Wright is no different. Guys 100/100 is something that alone should get you thinking and i wouldnt be exaggerating if i say that this albums kicks the ass of even "Master of Reality". GET THIS. Its a CLASSIC.

WORSHIP THEM OR DIE!
