O.L.D. - Old Lady Drivers (1988)

Genre - Grindcore, Death/Grind, Crossover Thrash

I thought it would be nice if I got out of the avant-prog hangover and post some kickass metal instead! It was about time guys. It cant get better than some real fast and chaotic old school grindcore.

Let me present to you guys Old Lady Drivers aka O.L.D. Yesterday I finally managed to check out the highly acclaimed Khanate and to tell you the truth the first two songs of the self titled didnt do much for me. But during those 20 minutes I came to realise what a goddamn awesome vocalist Alan Dubin is! That may be the only reason I may think about revisiting Khanate sometime later. Alright, I checked metal archives and came to know that he was a vocalist for a fuckin' GRINDCORE band way back in late 80s. Isnt that a reason enough to check those guys out?

Anyways O.L.D. play a chaotic, super fast grindcore (The way it is meant to be played!) with super cool lyrices throughout. In the later part of their career, they tried experimenting with their music and ended up playing avant-garde/industrial bullshit (going by some of those you tube samples, they were not worth it). James Plotkin has done a great job on guitaring, coming up with catchy riffs throughout. Solos come up for a very small time but they are tasty too. Dont be surprised if you find acoustic parts in between. Alan Dublin has delivered some of the sickest vocals you would have ever heard in grindcore. I always thought Jon Chang (Discordance Axis) was one of the best grind vocalist ever, but I think after listening to the track "Old Ladies Always Break Their Hips" on this record, I am in a fix! He goes from slow low guttural vocals to extremely fast and high pitched screams which will leave you awestruck. This is one of their album that features real drummer. And, He is awesome. Prepare to get assaulted by inhuman blastbeats and snareshots. And before I forget how can you not like a bands that wrote such legendary lyrices

"When we were young - it was only a game
You would win - at everything
Chilhood rivalry - developed and grew
Games became battles - the I would always lose
Now you're a big shot - controlling my life
Causing me nothing - but pain and strife
But I know your weakness - you haven't a friend
Except from your puppy - who soon will be dead

Here is your puppy's head
Your only friend - bloody red
It's all your fault - it is dead
Tides have turned - now you lose
If you want the rest
It's too late - there's nothing left
Mangled poodle - makes good stew
I ruined your life - I laugh as I chew"

This band is like the combination of sheer aggression of Wehrmacht and Cro-Mags with added brutality of Carcass! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnd On!

Guys this came out before Terrorizer's World Downfall,Relusion's Horrified, Carcass' Reek of Putrefaction and Dr. Shrinker's Wedding The Grotesque. Wonder why this is so underrated and not considered the holy grail of grindcore?

According to MA - The band were originally called Regurgitation, and recorded the widely circulated demo tape "Bathrooms Rule" in late 80's. This demo attracted the attention of Earache to their brand of humorous super-fast grind. Too bad, this album has never been released on a CD :(

BONUS - For all you Clapton fans, This one features a kickass COCAINE cover which may seem a little out of place but extremely funny and amazing.

Full Blown A.I.D.S. - s/t [2008]

According to Wikipedia: "The band is mostly known for making songs an octave lower than most bands."

That is actually a surprisingly good description. Full Blown A.I.D.S. is a musical project by none other than Seth Putnam of Anal Cunt fame. Vaginal Jesus this isn't, this is finally a serious project by the man everyone loves to hate. This album was supposedly recorded between 2003-2004 and released on Limited Appeal Records, but I don't really know. Why he waited so long to let this see the light of day while releasing lackluster AxCx albums I have no idea.

Full Blown A.I.D.S. is the aural equivalent of the worst toilet in Scotland from Trainspotting; this shit is filthy. The guitar tone is one of the worst I've ever heard (in a good way). People familiar with Accept Death should be right at home with this. The guitar on this album is like a prolapsed rectum, the strings are so loose you can practically hear them flopping in the breeze. Putnam's vocals are true to form, and he turns in a good performance if it is a bit monotonous. I've always thought his distinctive screams were wasted in his joke bands. The drumming is adequate, but has a loose organic quality that suits the music. The songs here vary from thrashy uptempo grind, to droning sludge. There is even an AC/DC cover included for good measure.

Check it out if you like stupidly heavy things.

Dissassemble - Demogrinder (2008)

Disassemble are a sludge tinged grind band out of Baltimore, Maryland. They are new band to the scene, but they definitely show a lot of promise for such young musicians. They've got a split coming out soon with Man Will Destroy Himself.

Not a whole hell of a lot more to say. This is a four track demo, get this and be sure to keep an eye on this band in the future.

In Disgust/Sidetracked - split (2007)

This is one hella tasty nugget of grind. In Disgust play a brand of grind violence immediately reminiscent of Insect Warfare. This is some brutal shit; extremely rapid changeups, heavy sludge mosh parts and blazing blast sections.

Sidetracked play an interesting youth crew influenced brand of power violence. Sidetracked's side is actually better in my opinion simply due to the fact that they play serious mind games. They'll start to settle into a stereotypical hardcore mosh riff, only to suddenly rip out a blazing blast section. They will use multiple tempo changes in a 10 second song. You never know what to expect. Crazyness. *interesting note*: none of Sidetracked's songs are scrobble-able, they're all under 30 seconds.

Fornicator - Fornicator (2002)

Well, yesterday was International Women's Day, and what did you do for your special someone? Did you take your gal out for some caviar and champagne at a fancy french restaurant, then to a theater to see that new romantic comedy with Owen Wilson? Did you take her for a walk in the park, holding hands, telling hillarious, yet politically-correct jokes, throwing your coat on the ground so that she can walk over puddles without getting dirty, knowing that a simple "My, what a gentleman!" look is enough compensation for your ruined, custom-made leather jacket?

Did you go back to her place to watch The Notebook and eat ice cream, give her a back massage, ponce her feet and prepare her a nice bubble bath, complete with incense sticks, candles and her favorite music? Did you respect her intimacy when she said she's too tired for sex, and that it would be a good idea for you to go home?

OR

Did you spend most of your day imbibed in alcohol, hearing your dead mother's voice inside your head, masturbating in front of an orphanage, resenting females because of childhood trauma, kidnapping teenagers (only to rape those cunts somewhere in the woods), fistfucking crackwhores, defecating inside emptied human torsos and generally treating women like objects?

If so, this album's for you. Kick-ass grind containing members of Lord Gore and Engorged, with Rob (Zooombie Roooooob!) from Whore, this is hate-filled music of G.G. Allin-esque proportions. The intro samples are good, the riffing's tight, the drumming's great and blasturbation-free, the vocals are sick (in a good non-wigger way) and any further stylistic disection would be somewhat useless. With song titles such as "Get On Your Knees And Fuck My Dog", "I'm A Goddamn Rapist" and "I Got Your Fuckin Kid Bitch", you're the one to decide if this is for you. Highly recomended if you're in a particularly agressive, humorous or paedophilic mood. Or all of them!

Nausea - Crime Against Humanity (1991)

Having Oscar Garcia of Terrorizer fame on vocals/guitar, this LA based band has been thought of as some sort of side project. However, give this (their only LP) a spin once, and you'll see that it stands well on it's own two feet.
They're a death/grind band with a slight doom influence. The most accurate description would be saying that it sounds somewhat like Terrorizer/Napalm Death combined with Brutal Truth (check out that absolutely HEAVY, buzzing bass guitar) and a hint of Black Sabbath.
One can figure out their theme quite easily by just looking at the album cover. If politically-charged lyrics make you cringe, just try to ignore them, for the music at hand is surely friggin' sweet.
I could say that the production is a bit uneven and the drum sound somewhat poor, but when has that ever stopped our appreciation of the music? Also, fun fact: some songs off "World Downfall" were actually Nausea songs, taken by Oscar to complete the album *winks at the Viking*

Anaal Nathrakh - Total Fucking Necro (2002)

Total fucking Necro is a compilation of Anaal Nathrakh's long forgotten demos and covers, tracks 1 - 4 are taken from the 1999 demo 'Anaal Nathrakh', tracks 5 - 9 track are taken from the demo that goes by the same name 'Total Fucking Necro' and the last track on the album entitled 'necrogeddon' is taken from the previously unreleased demo 'We Will Fucking Kill You', this track later went on to become 'The Necrogeddon' which is the closing track on 'Eschaton'. Two tracks from this album 'The Supreme Necrotic Audnance' and 'The Technogoat' were re -released on their first full length, 'The Codex Necro' and finally track 4 and 8, 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' and 'Carnage' are Mayhem covers.

This album is one of those tragically overlooked masterpieces from a band who over the years have made a steady incline in popularity, featuring two of the best covers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, and with the fear of having my head ripped off by trve Mayhem fans, they not only meet the quality that Mayhem produced, they surpass it by quite a long way. This album is an unrelenting assault on the ear drums from the second it begins to the final second played, with very little time for melody and zero tolerance for everything that exists, this record is perfect for those days when you just need to vent anger.

Total Fucking Necro also holds one of those hidden gem tracks, that to this day I am still bemused as to why Anaal Nathrakh have not re-recorded for a recent album, the track 'Satanarchrist' is the one track that utilises some degree of melody and it really is the stand out track on the album, a track that would have slotted in so perfectly on The Codex Necro.

The only thing that could probably work against the release is the somewhat sketchy production in places, I'm not talking Xasthur sketchy mind you.

Maruta - In Narcosis (2008)

The name Maruta comes from Project Maruta, a secret WWII era experiment program of the Japanese government. Project Maruta was the Japanese equivelent of the testing carried out by Josef Megele carried out on the prisoners at the Nazi concentration camps. The Project had the pretense of a weapons testing program, but in reality it was just an excuse for the sadistic Japanese Unit 731 entertain themselves by divising and implementing horrific atrocites on Japanese poltical prisoners.

Maruta then is a fitting name for this South Florida trio; their music is just a sick a sadistic as the murderers of Unit 731. They rep a modern style of grindcore characterised by their intentional lack of a bass player. This may partly be respossible for the sonic similarties between them and other bassless grind bands like Pig Destroyer and Discordance Axis. Maruta generally utalize the classic fast-slow dynamic, and unusually for a grind band, they are often at their best during the slow parts of their songs.

Check this shit....
