Abramelin (1990-2001)

One of Australia's best kept secrets, Abramelin produced some grade A death metal that possessed that old school brutality with tinges of non cheese infested melodies. Within the bands 11 year career the band suffered from a severe case of the dreaded revolving door lineup, with the only constants being vocalist Simon Dower and guitarist Tim Aldridge. While their first EP and full length was recorded with a full band, their last full length, Deadspeak, was recorded with a drum machine.

Band or no band, Dower penned some of the dirtiest lyrics that caused controversy in their home land, and performed them with excellence. His voice fits the music extremely well, somewhat reminding me of both sides of Carcass. Aldridge produced some of the most headbangable riffs I've heard. With the perfect amounts of groove, brutality, and melody, he had the formula down for each song. Hell, he's even not afraid to bust out the acoustic guitar for a nice contrast and mood settler. Together they wrote some awesome songs that separated themselves from the rest of the pack.


Transgression From Acheron [EP] (1994)
A nice little release. Dirty, yet audible. Only song re-recorded later on is Humble Abode.


Abramelin (1996)
This is probably the definitive album they released. Recorded with a full band, with that nice gritty old-school production. You can hear the cymbols vibrate! Songs like Misfortune, Humble Abode, and both parts of Stargazer is where the band shines. Hell, it's even ended with a mindblowingly awesome cover of Dead Can Dance's Cantara.



Deadspeak (2000)
The band's swan song. This was recorded as a two piece, and yes, it does have a drum machine. But don't be worried, it sounds well done and you can tell that the band wanted to play the material live. There are some inhuman rolls and a missed fill here and there, but it's nothing worth crying over. The production is prettier this time around, taming the guitar tone from last time around and putting the rest in its place. The band still maintains it's old school sound despite these.

OMFG DEATH METAL BAND WITH A DJ!!

Well, that pretty much sums up why this band is labelled 'Experimental'. But I must add the scratches are added tastefully and not overdone so it merges with the riffs and does not stick out like a sore thumb. This is a compilation and the Dj was only for one album so don't expect scratches on every track.

As far as the BDM part goes, there's nothing ground breaking happening here. The riffs sound similar to say Devourement and Dying Fetus but they do pull off quite a few surprised by doing so. The vocals are quite strong and mainly grind influenced. Get this album if you'd like to hear something new that hasn't been done bad.

Iniquity - Serenadium (1996)

Sublime Danish death metal that no self-respecting metalhead should live without hearing at least once. Heavy as fuck, with plenty of influence from both Autopsy and Suffocation, which creates an odd (but awesome) blend of doominess and chugging riffs. The production is both relatively clean and bass-heavy, so I'd reccomend some powerful headphones or a good subwoofer for maximum effect ;)

Azarath - Diabolic Impious Evil (2006)

Reviews - Okay here is another one of the polish death metal output. And perhaps the best from that country. Anybody who has known me on last.fm, orkut, facebook must be acquainted with my fanboism for the band. This band was introduced to me by one trsuted metalhead friend of mine who got me into extreme metal about 2 years back. Since then its been on my playlists forever.

And mind you, I have always believed that 95 percent of BDM sucks but thankfully this belong to the other 5. If you are still going to disregard this as just another brutal death band, just listen to it once at least. Imagine Suffocation on Drugs combined with the vocals and drumming of Anaal Nathrakh and add to that the evil atmosphere of bands like Grotesque and what you get is AZARATH. No pig sequels, no boring blastbeats, no chugga chugga suffocationish riffing. The songs are fast and there are few sections that are really one of the most intense moments in death metal ever. The album is opener is probably the best intro you would ever hear in metal. Inferno's drumming and Bruno's riffing can very well be the most awesome thing you would ever experience. Dont expect a raw production here, Its quite clean and polished.

While I like most of their released but these are one of few bands that got better with age. I can hardly wait for their 2009 output "Praise The Beast".
